What are we doing now?

| Dec 1, 2009
What a great question!

After making the momentous and difficult decision to leave Tandem New Zealand, we spent a few days recovering, but knew we needed to start looking forward. We had a family to feed!! Right from the beginning we knew that ministry was where we wanted to stay and that was our heartbeat. Campus ministry wasn't where we wanted to go as we knew that Student Life in Auckland was doing well and we didn't want to compete, so now what?

We decided to start our own ministry called HTL Ministries. Years ago, Bryce had begun a financial investment partnership called HTL Partnership with the HTL standing for Honour the Lord. We felt that was a great name to call our ministry as we want everything we do to Honour the Lord!! HTL Ministries has been developed as a "parent" organisation so that we can develop other ministries as the Lord leads, which brings us to what we are doing now.

In 2004 Bryce had the joy of starting Priority Associates in New Zealand. The purpose of PA was to work alongside believers in the workforce and helping them to Win-Build-Send in their context. Having worked for 13 years in a secular job, Bryce was the ideal person to help merge campus ministry strategies with strategies to reach the wider working community. Back then he and several Student Life graduates began the ministry and saw some great things happen.

Knowing that, we believed that God was leading us to move into working with the marketplace (workforce) and the wider community especially since campus wasn't an option for us. However, one thing Bryce had discovered in a large, spread-out city like Auckland, that ministry was difficult when you didn't have somewhere that people came to, like a campus. He began to think through many options and ideas and also his own interests and passions. What emerged was the idea for a ministry that would operate out of a fitness centre, but not just any old fitness centre, but a NON-PROFIT fitness centre that cares about not only physical fitness, but also financial, social, relational and most importantly, spiritual fitness.

"Fit 4 Life" is a non-profit, reduced rate fitness centre where members can not only come and work out in a professional gym, but also learn about why a relationship with God is relevant and how they can have that relationship, they can learn how to manage their finances better through free financial planning services offered by Bryce, learn how to have a better family life, marriage, work environment through free seminars we will run and all of this in a community of people who see Fit 4 Life as "more than a gym".

Fit 4 Life is going to be opened in February 2010 and we are EXCITED!!!!!

God has provided an awesome building for us which has so much space...enough for the fitness centre and for HTL Ministries to have an office. Location is in Glenfield on the North Shore of Auckland and we can't wait to see what God will do as we see people come to Christ, be discipled and in turn share the message of Jesus Christ with others.

2009.....well, now I know!!!

| Nov 4, 2009 | , |
I just looked at my last blog post....JANUARY!!! How crazy is that? I said I wondered what 2009 had in store and boy, oh, boy, was I wrong about how good it was going to be. 2009 will go down in the Bryce & Christy Staveley history as a year of CHANGE, HEARTBREAK and....well, the jury is still out on the rest. :)

We started the year with such hope and promise. Excitement over our new roles in Student Life, a new home, a new year. So fun!! We expected some challenging things...teenagers, turning 40, adjustments to a new home and routine, but we did not anticipate the bombshell of March 6th when our lives were turned upside down. It is a long and sordid tale and not one for a blog such as this, but suffice to say, we left our ministry of 15 years to start a new one. Not because of moral transgressions or any such thing (my husband is a wonderful man and devoted firstly to God and then to his family), but rather some very difficult relationships that led us to the point of resigning. So sad, heart-breaking and life-changing!!!

The emotions of that time linger, but in the midst of that pain, the Lord revealed truth and a future. Starting our own ministry was not in our plans at all, but HTL Ministries was founded. HTL stands for Honour the Lord as that is what we want to do in all our lives. We believe that the Lord has led us through a desert of four years - a desert of heartache, of revelation and of confirmation of the Lord's love for us - and we have come through it scarred, but alive and kicking!

We stand now on a precipice as the Lord takes HTL Ministries and it's first ministry, Fit 4 Life, a non-profit fitness centre designed to help people with the physical fitness, their financial fitness, their relational fitness and their spiritual fitness, into the future.

We are excited in God's provision of some colleagues from Student Life who decided to join us in this venture. We love you guys!! And now we have the most awesome building EVER to start Fit 4 Life.

So how does the rest of 2009 look.....who knows....I am no longer making predictions!!! It has been quite a year. Not one I am going to repeat hopefully and I am asking for a vacation from life-change for now!! :)

Goodbye 2008, Hello 2009

| Jan 4, 2009
It has been a long while since I have written anything on here. It is January 4th in Auckland, New Zealand and I have been reflecting on the past year and thinking about the new year ahead.

I can't say whether 2008 was a good year or a bad year...you know how we all do that, put our years in those categories. There were many AWESOME things about 2008 and then some INCREDIBLY difficult things too and to be honest...I am not sure what 2009 offers. Here's some of the things that I have reflected on about 2008.

Some highlights for me:
  • Travelling around the USA seeing amazing history, appreciating the glorious scenery and visiting with wonderful friends and family.
  • Visiting DisneyWorld 48 times in 10 months. So fun!
  • Experiencing American life with my little Kiwi family. We loved it and felt loved by people we were living life with.
  • Lake Hart Stint...what can I say!! A joy, a privilege, a never-to-be-forgotten experience.
  • Beautiful sunny days of Florida and and New Zealand summer.
  • Friends....I have amazing friends. I wish we were all in one place, but I am so thankful for them all.
  • 20th wedding anniversary - what a joy to be married to Bryce for 20 years. He is my best friend, my confidante, my go-to guy, my hero and the list goes on.
  • Family - I love my kids....I am so happy to be a mom to them and I am enjoying the teenage years with Laura. She is a delight and a treasure. I am sad to think the day is coming when she will be leaving home.
  • High School Musical 3 - ok, this is a weird one, I know, but I am so happy that there is a fun, hip, cool, and totally clean movie that I can watch with my kids and we can listen to the music and just enjoy life. I saw it 5 times so I guess I liked it.
Some difficult things:
  • Saying goodbye to the USA, to Orlando and most especially to my wonderful friends and family that live there.
  • Dealing with thyroid disease when the meds weren't working right. That was scary and a very anxiety-ridden time.
  • Uncertainty about our future - there was a real down time in Sept/Oct, but God has revealed a plan that is great, but it sure was stressful and difficult.
  • Selling our house - we built this house 11 years ago and I love it. It suits us, it is everything we wanted in a house and now we are moving. It took awhile to sell which was stressful, but now it is a done deal. I am sad, but glad it is over.
  • Packing and moving - I hate both!!! This year had a lot of packing and moving and we are just about ready to pack up our entire house.
  • Being away from close family - it is hard that I am no longer living in close proximity to my parents or brother. I miss them lots!
  • My friend, Kirstie, lost her mum to cancer this past week. I am so sad for her and her family as her mum was a wonderful woman of God, wife and mother. It has been difficult to see Kirstie have to walk through this journey and yet joyful at the same time. She is amazing!
You know...maybe 2008 wasn't that bad really when I think about it. Some awesome memories were made.

Regarding 2009, well, I am thankful to be living another year of life. I turn 40 this year so that is kind of weird. I am looking forward to growing in my roles as a wife, mother, daughter, co-worker, friend, and lover of Jesus. Maybe 2009 really does have a lot of good things to come.
